What should I expect at my appointment?

All appointments take about 15-30 minutes beyond the actual hands-on massage time. This allows us time to check in about what is going on for you and discuss the session plan, as well as giving you time at the end of your massage to move slowly and gently come back to reality. Expect to spend an extra 15-minutes at your first appointment, as you will fill out some paper work (including a health history form) prior to beginning the session, and have time to give feedback afterwards. Your honesty in the former is essential and greatly appreciated in the latter. Feel welcome to ask any questions you have about the style of bodywork, pressure, etc. You are in control of your comfort throughout the massage. Tell Ama immediately if anything is uncomfortable, if you need her to adjust anything. Massage can release pent-up physical, emotional and energetic knots. It is normal to laugh, cry, sleep, sigh, talk, or otherwise let out whatever comes up for you. Please feel welcome to do so. This is about you HEALING!

Do I need to do anything after my massage?

Drink more water – it will help flush the loosened toxins out of your system and aid in preventing sluggishness. Avoid caffeine and alcohol. Leave your schedule open after the massage appointment. You may find yourself needing time to relax before heading back into the full swing of life. Try going for a walk – it can also help prevent sluggishness and aid toxin elimination, as well as helping you to stay “in your body.” It is normal to be a little sore after receiving deep pressure bodywork. If soreness persists, try using an ice pack for 10 to 20 minutes once an hour until the soreness goes away, taking a warm bath with Epsom salt, or using a heat pack, whatever feels best to you. A good rule of thumb is to ice if you see any swelling, or use heat if there is no swelling. Call Ama if soreness or fatigue persist, and to discuss how you are feeling a day or 2 after your appointment.
